Ethics in publication (Giorgio BORREANI)

The module analyzes and discuss the basis of ethic in publication and criteria for the publication and authorship of research articles. In order to create awareness of the young researcher in roles embedded in the current science publishing system which have to disseminate evidenced knowledge, maintaining the intersection of science advancement and reputational and financial rewards for scientists and publishers. The ethical code of Conduct of the University of Turin (D.R. n. 646 del 29/02/2016) is also discussed, where the following aspects are reiterated: the minimum duties of diligence, loyalty, impartiality and good conduct that university employees are required to observe is also discussed.

Drafting images for scientific purposes - Scientific graphics (Francesco NEGRO)

Visual material is key to communicate science effectively. Images can be found in several scientific products such as articles, books, slides and posters. Nonetheless, visual quality of images is often treated as an add-on instead of being considered an integrated part of the work.

The module introduces the main theoretical principles of visual communication and graphic design with particular regard to scientific products. The practical use of software for drafting and modifying raster and vector images is introduced as well.

Overall, the purpose of the module is providing the students with knowledge and tools useful for realizing clear and effective images. Students will be made able to draft pictures, graphs, diagrams etc. that can contribute to the overall quality of their scientific products.

The Editors' opinion (Roundtable) (Luca ROLLE)

Scientific communication and social networks (Andrea MASINO)

The module deals with the raising activities of a more communicating and networking strategy to reach the society. How can I talk and write, being interesting, about a scientific paper, a research project or a scientific congress? Alternative publishing platforms, as open access, provide opportunities for scientists to interact with and include the public in the discussion. Social media and web sources may be helping to narrow knowledge gaps caused partly by traditional media that tend to be tailored to highly educated audiences. Communication then allows us to start new projects, create networks of excellence to share experiences, involve more stakeholders and get support for new projects.
