Ethics in publication (Giorgio BORREANI)

The module analyzes and discuss the basis of ethic in publication and criteria for the publication and authorship of research articles. In order to create awareness of the young researcher in roles embedded in the current science publishing system which have to disseminate evidenced knowledge, maintaining the intersection of science advancement and reputational and financial rewards for scientists and publishers. The ethical code of Conduct of the University of Turin (D.R. n. 646 del 29/02/2016) is also discussed, where the following aspects are reiterated: the minimum duties of diligence, loyalty, impartiality and good conduct that university employees are required to observe is also discussed.

Drafting images for scientific purposes (Francesco NEGRO)

Visual material is key to communicate science effectively. Images can be found in several scientific products such as articles, books, slides and posters. Nonetheless, visual quality of images is often treated as an add-on instead of being considered an integrated part of the work.

The module introduces the main theoretical principles of visual communication and graphic design with particular regard to scientific products. The practical use of software for drafting and modifying raster and vector images is introduced as well.

Overall, the purpose of the module is providing the students with knowledge and tools useful for realizing clear and effective images. Students will be made able to draft pictures, graphs, diagrams etc. that can contribute to the overall quality of their scientific products.

Communicating and engaging the public in research (Cristiana PEANO, Nadia BORGETTI)

In recent years, all over the world, there has been increasing pressure on universities to move from focusing mainly on teaching and research to adding the Third Mission (TM), labelled as 'a contribution to society'.

In particular, Public Engagement describes the many ways in which members of the public can be involved in designing, conducting and disseminating research.  It is a two-way process with the aim of generating mutual benefit between the public and researchers and ultimately improving the quality or impact of research.

There are many benefits to engaging the public in research and engagement activities can take many different forms. The type of activity undertaken depends on the purpose of the engagement:

  • Informing and inspiring the public: Researchers inform and inspire young people, adults and family audiences about their research.
  • Consulting and listening to public opinions: To better inform researchers about public views and concerns about their research, and also an opportunity to hear new perspectives and insights. Possible techniques include: public speaking; online consultations; panels and user groups.
  • Collaborating with the public: In which researchers and the public work together on particular projects or help shape the future direction of research, policy or implementation of research findings. Possible techniques include: crowd-sourcing; citizen science; knowledge co-production.
